Entrance Exams & Eligibility

In India, there are multiple entrance exams held for students who seek admission to a respective higher education program. Here is the list of major entrance exams cited that are required for college admissions:

1. JEE Main & Advanced

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is a two-stage national-level engineering admission process and qualifying exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for NITs/IIITs/CFTIs. It acts as a screening test for the top 2.5 lakh candidates to appear for JEE Advanced (conducted by IITs), which is a challenging, high-level entrance test for IITs.

Eligibility Criteria for JEE Main in 2026:

  • Passing Year: Candidates must have passed Class 12 or equivalent in 2024, 2025, or 2026.
  • Age Limit: No age limit is prescribed.
  • Subjects: Physics and Mathematics are compulsory, along with Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology/Technical Vocational Subject.
  • Attempts: Candidates can appear for 6 attempts over 3 consecutive years.
  • Percentage (for Admission): 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD). 

Eligibility Criteria for JEE Advanced in 2026:

  • Performance in JEE Main: Only the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (including all categories) of JEE Main 2026 (Paper 1) are eligible.
  • Age Limit: General category candidates must be born on or after October 1, 2001. Five years of relaxation is given to SC, ST, and PwD candidates (born on or after October 1, 1996).
  • Attempts: A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.
  • Class 12 Appearance: Candidates must have appeared for Class 12 (or equivalent) for the first time in 2025 or 2026.
  • Minimum Marks: 75% aggregate in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD).

2. NEET-UG

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET (UG) is formally known as the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT). It acts as an entrance test for aspiring candidates who want admission in undergraduate medical programs such as MBBS, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). 

Eligibility Criteria for NEET:

  • Age Requirement: At least 17 years old
  • Class 12 Appearance: passed 10+2 or equivalent in Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English from a recognised board.
  • Minimum Marks: Aggregate 50% in 10+2 for General, and 40-45% for reserved candidates.  

3. CLAT

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is one of the national-level entrance exams in India. Conducted by the Consortium of NLUs for students who are seeking admission to undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) law programs. Held annually for 26 National Law Universities (NLUs).

Eligibility Criteria for CLAT

    • Educational Qualification: Must passed 10+2 examination or an equivalent qualification from a recognised board.
  • Minimum Marks:
    • General/OBC/PWD/NRI/PIO/OCI: 45% aggregate or its equivalent grade.
    • SC/ST Categories: 40% aggregate or its equivalent grade.
  • Age Limit: There is no upper age limit.

4. CUET

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) is a national-level entrance exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for students who are seeking admissions across central, state, private, and deemed universities in India. It was introduced in 2022, and students can grab seats in top universities like DU, BHU, etc.

Eligibility Criteria for CUET

  • Educational Qualification: Must have passed class 12 or equivalent. 
  • Minimum Marks: Generally, 50% aggregate for General and 45% for reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwD).
  • Age Limit: There is no age limit for appearing in the CUET UG. 
  • Nationality: Candidates must be Indian citizens. Candidates from Bhutan, Nepal, and Tibetan refugees who settled in India before January 1, 1962, are also eligible.

5. NATA

The National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) is a national-level entrance exam in India conducted by the Council of Architecture for admission to B.Arch programs. It is a computer-based test, rather than a traditional hand-drawing. 

Eligibility Criteria for NATA

  • Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed or be appearing for:
    • 10+2 examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) as mandatory subjects.
    • 10+3 Diploma with Mathematics as a compulsory subject.
  • Minimum Marks: At least 50% aggregate marks in 10+2 or Diploma, as well as in Mathematics.
  • Age Limit: There is no upper age limit for NATA 2026.

6. MAT / CAT

CAT (Common Admission Test) and MAT (Management Aptitude Test) are premier Indian MBA entrance exams. CAT is a high-difficulty, annual exam for top-tier IIMs/B-schools. Meanwhile, MAT is an easier, 4-times-yearly exam accepted by 600+ colleges. CAT has 3 sections in 2 hours; MAT has 5 sections in 2.5 hours.

MAT (Management Aptitude Test) Eligibility

  • Educational Qualification: A bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university.
  • Minimum Marks: No minimum percentage is required to sit for the MAT exam itself. However, specific institutes accepting MAT scores may require at least 50% marks in graduation.
